You can have the best premise in the world or the most heartfelt character in the world, but if the arc of the story isn’t elegant and riveting from beginning to end, you’ll lose readers. Some writers like to plot their stories before writing. Other writers like to discover their story through a first draft and then shape the structure in revisions. Whatever type of writer you are—whether you have a finished first draft or are starting a brand-new project—we’ll explore a variety of approaches to plotting your best story.
You’ll gain a deeper understanding to how the plot structure affects — and is affected by — character development, scene pacing, thematic argument, and reader engagement. The class will be very interactive, with opportunities for you to get guidance plotting your current novel, script, or screenplay. We’ll also tackle some challenging issues like backstory, exposition, multiple protagonists, and subplots. Come with questions. You’ll leave with answers and big insights.
